Bayer Statement on Positive Verdict in Stephens Trial
Today, a jury reached a positive verdict in favor of Monsanto in the Roundup™ trial in the Superior Court of California County of San Bernardino, Stephens v Monsanto, before Judge Gilbert Ochoa. Below is the company’s statement:
“The jury’s verdict in favor of the company brings this trial to a successful conclusion and is consistent with the evidence in this case that Roundup™ is not the cause of Ms. Stephens’ cancer. While we have great sympathy for Ms. Stephens, we agree with the jury that Roundup™ is not the cause of her illness.
“The outcome of this case follows a favorable verdict in Clark and the plaintiff’s voluntary dismissal in Jimenez and marks the third positive development in the Roundup™ litigation in recent months. As part of its five-point plan to help bring closure to the glyphosate litigation, Bayer indicated earlier this year that it would be prepared to bring cases like these three to trial to test their strength when plaintiffs’ attorneys make unreasonable demands, even while the company continues to negotiate resolutions for other claims.
“The company continues to stand behind the safety of Roundup™ and will confidently defend the safety of our product as well as our good faith actions in any future litigation.”
